WHAT WILL THEY CALL IT AFTER ALL?

Brighton Park’s Nexton Elementary School

With trailers being added to the crowded Nexton Elementary- despite the 2023 opening of Berkeley Preparatory Academy- Nexton is in need of another school to keep pace with the home sales of MidTown and all the apartments being razed in Nexton.

As the educational landscape continues to evolve, this state-of-the-art institution promises to set th standard for innovative learning environments, fostering a generation of curious and empowered learners.

State-of-the-Art Facilities

When Nexton elementary first opened to much fanfare in 2020 they boasted about every student in Kindergarten and 1st grade getting an iPad. Although they seem to have Chromebooks now. Hopefully the new MidTown school will be a leap ahead in facilities and technology. And let’s hope they have enough room for the growth in the years to come!

Community Engagement and Beyond

Education doesn't happen in isolation; it's a collaborative effort between students, educators, parents, and the community at large. Nexton parent’s are always involved in education. The idea of moving here is so you can walk your kids to school- or golf cart for some parents

Impacting the Future

The Nexton K-8 School isn't just a local endeavor; it has the potential to impact the entire region’s real estate values. Strong communities start with strong families. The cornerstone is schools, local businesses, and close by convenience. Nexton’s developers have mastered that- and it’s only getting better in 2024 & 2025!

MidTown School Future Location

THE LOCATION

The school will be constructed in partnership with Brookfield Properties.

BCSD came to an agreement with Brookfield Properties, which includes a land donation of approximately 35 acres “and a commitment by the developer to pay voluntary impact fees of $1850 per unit.”

The school, expected to open in 2025, will take pressure off of existing schools in the area, which are currently at or over capacity. Exponential growth in the area is expected to continue.

BCSD said that the decision to construct a K-8 school instead of separate elementary and middle schools “is based largely on the ability to expeditiously and efficiently add capacity at both the elementary and middle school levels.” BCSD is also able to adapt the school to meet evolving needs, meaning it can easily be converted into a standalone elementary or middle school in the future.

“We are very excited to announce this agreement with Brookfield Properties which will result in building a much needed school in the Nexton area,” said Berkeley County School District Superintendent Deon Jackson. He went on to say that the agreement is “a win for the students and taxpayers of Berkeley County.”

Planned to open in 2025, this school will be part of acclaimed Berkeley County School District (BCSD) and located in Midtown, Nexton's newest neighborhood. Let's start with the facts as we know them, shall we?

The agreement between Nexton and BCSD conveys 26+ acres in Midtown at the corner of Nexton Parkway and Blueway Ave. Per Katie Tanner, PIO for BCSD, "The plan to build a K-8 school, as opposed to a traditional elementary or middle school, is based largely on the ability to expeditiously and efficiently add capacity at both the elementary and middle school levels. Additionally, a K-8 model provides the District with more flexibility for conversion into a stand-alone elementary or middle school, if needed in the future as growth in the area is expected to continue.”

The timeline for the school depends on funding but is slated to open for the 2025 school year. As part of the agreement, Nexton has agreed to voluntary School Improvement fees of $1,850 per unit for all future development.

The school will be located at the corner of Midtown Avenue and Nexton Parkway, making it perfectly walkable from anywhere in Midtown - and bikeable from Brighton Park Village, should you need to travel over.

We all just hope the principals are as good as Nexton’s Dr Hoots! She’s an amazing administrator and the reason Nexton Elementary is so great!
